Binge Reading

Filed under: General — Neil Aitken @ 4:50 pm

Other than editing and sorting through my thesis manuscript, I haven’t done much writing since I got back from Idyllwild. I have been reading though…

Fiction
The Electrical Storm by Kerri Sakamoto (1998)
The Last Crossing by Guy Vanderhaeghe (2002)

Poetry
Narrow Road to the Interior and Other Writings by Matsuo Basho, translated by Sam Hamill (1998)
Names Above Houses by Oliver de la Paz (2001)
Hip Logic by Terrance Hayes (2002)
Road Atlas by Campbell McGrath (1999)
Miracle Fruit by Aimee Nezhukumatathil (2003)
Bellocq’s Ophelia by Natasha Trethewey (2002)

When I’m up for it, I’ll try my hand at writing a few reviews.

Upcoming Readings

I have two upcoming readings — both of which I am very excited about. Coming first is the reading with Louise Mathias, who I had the pleasure of hearing feature not long ago at Tebot Bach. There’s an unearthly edge to her work, a beauty that emerges at the threshold between terror and awe. Mystery is a word that seems to haunt these poems. Check out her book, Lark Apprentice.

The Beyond the Valley of Contemporary Poets Anthology reading promises to be dazzling night of poetry. While I don’t have the list in front of me, I can assure you that it’s well worth the trip out to Studio City.
