This Just In — Portland Review Takes 2 Poems :)
Wow! Just arrived in the afternoon email — Portland Review has accepted two of my poems: “What I Know About Abstraction” and “In the Country I Call Home” — I’m excited! Both of these are from the first manuscript, The Lost Country of Sight. Hopefully that bodes well for everyone else out there — here’s hoping for happy news from your favorite journal.

“What I Know About Abstraction” actually came about from doing an exercise I had made up for my undergraduate class.
I gave them a poetry “quiz” which consisted of: 1) defining a set of abstract terms using simile and metaphor (eg. “Sleep is…”); 2) giving an unusual location for a set of things (some abstract, some specific); and 3) writing 3 sentence answers to a few of Neruda’s poetic questions from his Book of Questions.
I liked the idea so much, I found myself filling out the quiz and ended up well on my way to the poem!
